e-Aadhaar Password: How to Open Your Aadhaar PDF

Your e-Aadhaar PDF is locked with a password made from your name and year of birth. Here is the exact format with UIDAI’s examples, a builder that works it out for you, and a free tool that removes the password in your browser.

The e-Aadhaar password is the first 4 letters of your name in CAPITAL letters, followed by your year of birth in 4 digits (YYYY). It is always 8 characters for names of 4 letters or more. These are UIDAI’s own examples:

Name on AadhaarYear of birthPasswordWhy
SURESH KUMAR1990SURE1990First 4 letters + year
SAI KUMAR1990SAIK1990The space is skipped, so the 4th letter comes from the surname
P. KUMAR1990P.KU1990The dot counts as a character; the space does not
RIA1990RIA1990Names shorter than 4 letters are used in full

Use your name exactly as printed in English on your Aadhaar, always in capitals, with no space between the name part and the year. The same password opens the regular and the masked e-Aadhaar.

    Which name and which year?

The name is the full name as UIDAI holds it, read from the start: first name, then middle name or surname. It is not a nickname, and not the name on your PAN or bank account if those are spelled differently. If your Aadhaar says MOHD. RAFIQ, the password starts with MOHD; if it says MOHAMMED RAFIQ, it starts with MOHA. When in doubt, look at the name line on your physical Aadhaar card or in the mAadhaar app.

The year is your year of birth only, in 4 digits: 1990, not 90 and not your full date of birth. If you updated your name or date of birth in Aadhaar, a newly downloaded e-Aadhaar uses the updated details.

    Aadhaar password not working?

    These cover almost every failure:

Remove the password from your e-Aadhaar

Many job, admission, KYC and government portals reject password-protected PDFs, and typing the password every time you open the file gets old. The tool above removes it: drop the e-Aadhaar in, enter the password once, and download a copy that opens anywhere. It runs entirely in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.

Keep the unlocked copy as carefully as the physical card. When you only need to prove your identity, share the masked e-Aadhaar (only the last 4 digits of the number visible) rather than the full one. If a form also limits the file size, compress the PDF to 200 KB or to 100 KB; to put photos of the front and back into one PDF, use combine images to PDF.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the password of the e-Aadhaar PDF?

The first 4 letters of your name in CAPITAL letters followed by your year of birth in YYYY format. For SURESH KUMAR born in 1990 the password is SURE1990.

What if my name has fewer than 4 letters?

Use your whole name followed by the year of birth. For RIA born in 1990 the password is RIA1990.

Do spaces and dots in my name count?

Spaces are skipped, dots are kept. SAI KUMAR gives SAIK1990, and P. KUMAR gives P.KU1990.

    Is the Aadhaar password case-sensitive?

Yes. The name part must be in CAPITAL letters: SURE1990 opens the file, sure1990 does not.

What is the password of the masked Aadhaar?

The same as the regular e-Aadhaar: the first 4 letters of your name in capitals plus your year of birth.

Can I change my e-Aadhaar password?

No. UIDAI sets it from your name and year of birth. You can remove it from your own copy with the free tool on this page.

How do I remove the password from my Aadhaar PDF?

Drop the e-Aadhaar PDF into the tool on this page, enter the password once, and download the unlocked copy. It runs in your browser, so your Aadhaar is never uploaded.
