Repair PDF – Fix a Corrupted PDF File
Rebuild a damaged PDF that will not open or shows errors. The repair reconstructs the file’s internal structure entirely in your browser, and tells you honestly when a file is beyond saving.
This free tool repairs a corrupted PDF document by rebuilding its internal skeleton: the cross-reference table and object structure that tell a viewer where every page lives. That structure is what usually breaks when a file is interrupted mid-download, mangled by an email gateway, or saved wrongly by a buggy app, and rebuilding it is what turns "the file is damaged" back into an opening document.
The repair runs locally in your browser, so the broken file is never uploaded. And unlike repair services that always claim success, this tool is honest: it tells you when a file is genuinely beyond saving, because content that is physically missing cannot be conjured back by anyone.
How to repair a corrupted PDF file
- Select the broken PDF
Drag the file that will not open into the box above, or click to browse.
- Click Repair PDF
The tool analyzes the file and reconstructs its internal structure on your device.
- Read the honest verdict
You are told whether damage was found and rebuilt, whether the file was actually fine, or whether it is too damaged to save.
- Download the repaired copy
The rebuilt PDF downloads with a "-repaired" suffix and opens in any viewer.
What can and cannot be repaired
A PDF is content (the pages) plus a structural index that locates that content. Corruption usually hits the index, and that is fully rebuildable:
- Fixable: "the file is damaged and could not be repaired" errors from Adobe Reader, files that open in one app but not another, damaged cross-reference tables, files mangled in transfer while the content survived.
- Not fixable: content that is physically absent. A download that stopped at 40% only contains 40% of the document, and no tool, here or anywhere, can restore the missing part. The fix is re-downloading or re-requesting the original.
Two lookalike problems are worth ruling out first: a PDF that asks for a password is encrypted, not corrupted (our Unlock PDF tool is the answer, and for bank statements the password format guide), and a file with a wrong or missing .pdf extension just needs renaming.
PDF not opening in WhatsApp?
A special case worth naming, because it is extremely common: a PDF received on WhatsApp that will not open. In roughly descending order of likelihood: the download silently failed partway (re-download it from the chat, or ask the sender to resend), the file is a password-protected statement and the preview reports it as broken instead of asking for the password, or WhatsApp's built-in viewer is failing where a proper one succeeds (open the file in Adobe Reader or Google Drive instead).
If a full re-download still will not open anywhere, run it through the repair above: transfer corruption with intact content is exactly the fixable case.

Frequently asked questions
How do I repair a corrupted PDF file online for free?
Drop the file into the tool above and click Repair PDF. Its internal structure is rebuilt in your browser and the repaired copy downloads. Free, no signup, and the file is never uploaded.
Can every corrupted PDF be repaired?
No, and honest tools say so. Structural damage is fixable because the content is still in the file. Missing content, as with a download that was cut short, cannot be restored by any tool; only re-downloading the original helps.
Why does my PDF open on my phone but not my computer?
Some viewers tolerate structural damage that others reject. Repairing the file rebuilds it into a strictly valid PDF that every viewer accepts, which fixes exactly this inconsistency.
A PDF from WhatsApp will not open. Is it corrupted?
Often it is just an incomplete download: open the chat and download it again, or ask the sender to resend. If it is a bank statement, it may be password-protected rather than broken. If a fresh download still fails everywhere, run the repair above.
Is my file uploaded during the repair?
No. The analysis and rebuild run locally in your browser, so even sensitive broken documents never leave your device.
The tool says my PDF is too damaged. What now?
The file is missing content, not just structure. Get a fresh copy: re-download from the original source, ask the sender to resend, or re-export from the app that created it. No repair service can recreate data that is not in the file, whatever they promise.
