Unsecure PDF: Remove Security from a PDF
Turn a secured PDF into a normal one you can print, copy, and edit. The security is removed in your browser: your file is never uploaded.
This free tool unsecures a PDF online without sending it anywhere. If your PDF opens normally but shows "(SECURED)" in the title bar and will not let you print, copy text, or edit, drop it in: the tool shows exactly which actions are blocked, then removes the security and downloads an unrestricted copy. For this kind of secured PDF no password is needed.
Most online PDF security removers upload your document to their servers first. This one does the work on your own device, which matters for the files that are usually secured: bank statements, e-Aadhaar, payslips, tax forms, and contracts.
How to unlock a secured PDF file
- Select your secured PDF
Drag the PDF into the box above or click to browse. The file is opened locally in your browser and never uploaded.
- Check what is blocked
The tool lists the security settings it found: whether printing, copying, editing, comments, and page changes are allowed or blocked, and whether the file needs a password.
- Click Unsecure PDF
Restrictions are removed without any password. If the PDF also has a password for opening it, enter that password once.
- Download the unsecured copy
An unrestricted PDF downloads automatically with an "-unlocked" suffix, so your original stays untouched.
Why does my PDF say (SECURED)?
Adobe Acrobat and other readers add "(SECURED)" to the title bar when a PDF carries security settings. There are two kinds, and they behave very differently:
- Restrictions (permissions password): the PDF opens without asking for anything, but printing, copying, or editing is greyed out. The author set an owner password to lock those settings. The content can be read by any PDF reader, so the restrictions only hold as long as the software chooses to respect them. This tool removes them with no password.
- Open password: the PDF asks for a password before it shows a single page. That is real encryption (AES in current files) and it cannot be bypassed. You can still unsecure the file here, but you have to enter the password once.
Not sure which one you have? Drop the file in. The readout under the file name tells you before you click anything.
Remove PDF restrictions: printing, copying, editing
A secured PDF stores one on/off setting per action, and the tool reads and clears all of them:
- Printing: the print button is disabled, or only low-quality printing is allowed.
- Copying text and images: you can select text but copy does nothing, which also blocks pasting figures into Excel.
- Editing: the document is read-only in every editor.
- Comments and form fields: highlighting, notes, and filling in forms are blocked.
- Page changes: pages cannot be deleted, rotated, extracted, or merged into another PDF.
The unsecured copy is the same document with the security layer taken off. Text stays selectable, bookmarks and links keep working, image quality is unchanged, and there is no watermark.
Convert a secured PDF to unsecured: the other methods
There are a few other ways to get from a secured PDF to an unsecured one, each with a catch:
- Print to PDF in Chrome: open the file in the browser and print it to a new PDF. This only works when printing is allowed, and the result is a reprint: bookmarks, links, and form fields are lost.
- Adobe Acrobat Pro: File, Properties, Security, then set Security Method to No Security. It requires the paid version and the permissions password, which you usually do not have.
- Upload-based websites: they work, but your document is sent to and processed on someone else's server.
If the file asks for a password that you know, our Unlock PDF page covers removing it step by step. For statements from Indian banks, the bank statement password guide lists the password format each bank uses.
What this tool cannot do
Three honest limits:
- Forgotten open passwords. If the PDF needs a password to open and you do not know it, the security cannot be removed. No legitimate tool can do that for modern encryption.
- DRM-protected ebooks. Files locked to a reader app or an account use a different system and are not supported.
- Digital signatures. A signed or certified PDF will show its signature as invalid after any change, including removing security. Keep the original if the signature matters.
Use this on documents that are yours or that you are authorized to use. Restrictions are often set by default by the software that produced the file, but sometimes the author chose them on purpose.

Frequently asked questions
How do I unsecure a PDF?
Drop the secured PDF into the tool above and click Unsecure PDF. If the file only restricts printing, copying, or editing, the security is removed without a password and an unrestricted copy downloads. If the file needs a password to open, enter that password once.
Can I remove security from a PDF without the password?
Yes, when the security is a set of restrictions: the PDF opens normally but blocks printing, copying, or editing. Those are removed without any password. If the PDF asks for a password before it opens, that password is required and cannot be bypassed.
Is my PDF uploaded when I unsecure it online?
No. The page runs in your browser, but the PDF itself is processed on your own device and never sent to a server. That is the difference from most online PDF security removers.
How do I copy text from a secured PDF?
Unsecure it first. Drop the PDF in, click Unsecure PDF, and open the downloaded copy: text can be selected and copied normally. The text itself is not changed or re-typed, so nothing is lost.
How do I print a secured PDF?
If the print button is greyed out, the PDF has a printing restriction. Remove the security with this tool and print the downloaded copy like any other PDF.
What is the difference between unsecure, unlock, and unprotect PDF?
They describe the same task: removing the security settings from a PDF so it behaves like a normal file. "Unlock" is mostly used when a password is involved, "unsecure" and "unprotect" when the file is restricted.
Will the unsecured PDF look the same?
Yes. Only the security layer is removed. Pages, text, images, bookmarks, links, and form fields stay as they were, and no watermark is added.
Can I unsecure my e-Aadhaar or bank statement PDF?
Yes, with its password. These files use an open password, so enter it once and the downloaded copy opens without one. For e-Aadhaar the password is the first four letters of your name in capitals followed by your year of birth.
